CONTACT OR CONTEST - Rule 17 As an umpire (and player!) you need to understand that netball is no longer seen as a ‘non contact’ sport. Some contact may occur between two players fairly contesting a ball. This is acceptable as long as the contact does not interfere with the player in a way that she is disadvantaged. Therefore the umpire would take NO action If a player, despite unfair contact was still able to control and direct their pass the umpire should look to applying the advantage rule. This is a very fine judgement, which has to be made and needs to be practised. However in a game there is nothing more irritating to players, spectators and coaches than to see the ball go forward and then have it brought back by the umpire Should unfair contact inhibit the players ability to pass successfully, the umpire must apply the appropriate penalty. What is Contest? Something : we want to allow is even and fair where the contact rule is not broken What is Contact? Something: that interferes with play that may infringe the rules (Rule 17)
