COPPER CABLE THEFT, DUNDEE, Thursday, May 22, 2014 Police in Dundee are investigating the theft of copper cable from a building site in Hebrides Drive that happened sometime between 5.30pm on Wednesday, May 7 and 8am on Thursday, May 8. Around 40 metres of copper was taken from five houses under construction. This is not the first incident at this development in recent weeks and police are appealing for witnesses who have any information that may assist with enquiries to contact Police Scotland on 101. Clearly there is a black market for all kinds of metal and police engage with people in the scrap metal business to try and seek their assistance in tackling this issue. Building sites are not the only locations that can be subject to metal theft and businesses have a role to play in reducing the chances of their becoming victims of crime. Alarms and CCTV-systems, whether stand alone or integrated, should be seriously considered to protect tools, equipment, plant and materials and the compound’s buildings and infrastructure. If CCTV is to be used it should be supported by suitable lighting. Loss of tools, materials, plant or equipment can come at great expense. It can also halt progress and may even affect jobs. All tools and materials should be locked away when not in use. Wherever possible, all property and equipment should be clearly marked to deter thieves. Police Scotland asks the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately to the police. This includes people or vehicles seen at or near to building sites. People should also contact the police if they are offered cheap or cut price materials or goods. It is a criminal offence to buy stolen property. Anyone who has information that could assist Police Scotland into this incident should call 101. Alternatively information can be passed anonymously via the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
