CORD- S/L On Ebola Sensitization By Issa Mansaray The Acting Executive Director of Counterparts in Rehabilitation and Development (CORD-Sierra Leone), Abdul Rahman Jawara disclosed to this medium on Thursday 2nd October 2014 that the organization is presently engaged in social mobilization and door-to-door sensitization on key messages on Ebola such as avoiding unnecessary large gatherings, hand shaking and encouraging people to frequently wash their hands with soap. He continued that the public is also urged to use the free toll line 117 to report suspected cases of Ebola and deaths. Mr. Jawara pointed out that before the outbreak of the Ebola virus, CORD-Sierra Leone has been implementing the WASH project in forty communities across the country including Moyamba, Pujehun and Kenema Districts disclosing that thirty-four animators were trained for three days by UNICEF to carry out the door-to-door Ebola key messages to communities, informed that the people were sensitized about the origin of Ebola and prevention/care and that the one-year project is funded by UNICEF. He maintained that hand washing with soap and water was recommended by CORD and partner organizations to discourage the use of chlorine that has serious skin effects. He said the WASH project has been successful as evaluation indicates 85% reduction in water-borne diseases like cholera and diaherrea observing that the money people used to pay for hospital bills is now used to address other issues including honoring the school fees of their children.
