CORUNNA — The Shiawassee County Health Department recently conducted water sampling of the Shiawassee River to monitor E. coli bacteria levels and announced the river is safe for partial contact. Three locations were monitored including McCurdy Park, the Oliver Street bridge in of Owosso and Juddville Road bridge inRush Township. The department does not recommend full body contact because river conditions change rapidly. The sampled locations are currently “in compliance” with established state guidelines for bacterial concentrations and body contact. Water should not exceed 300 E. coli per 100 mililiters. At McCurdy Park, the level was 134, at Oliver Street it was 157 and at Juddville Road it was 193. During recent flood events, several communities along the river reported combined sewer overflows that dumped raw sewage into the waterway.
