COUNTDOWN to my Five Favorite Christmas Songs, with historical background: #2: Carol of the Bells Originally a Ukrainian folksong for the New Year called Shchedryk, it was adapted into English and premiered at Kiev University in 1916. Because it ushers the season in a unique way, it unsurprisingly has been reproduced in a variety of renditions—none of which I was completely satisfied! John Williams (1990) version is too short, Pentatonix has a version (2012) but they are a tad overplayed, August Burns Red (2012) and the Trans Siberian Orchestra (1995) have interesting interpretations but I know a sizable chunk of my friends would have a stroke because back-beats and electric guitars are of the devil... so I settled on the source material. I hope you all like hearing Ukrainian! Its beautiful. https://youtube/watch?v=0UmvUy1LziE After that, I recommend checking out George Winstons haunting piano solo: youtube/watch?v=1JYrOMK1aDA&feature=related
