COWARDS WIN A monk living alone in an island was surprised to see a woman on the shore. She was the lone survivor of a shipwreck. The monk quickly gathered as much food and water he could and stock them in this hut. Then, approaching the woman, he said, “Woman, there’s more than enough food and clothing in my hut that will last for three months. They are all yours. A village boat visits this island once a month and if you wish to leave, you can wait for it.” “But where are you going?” the woman asked. “I am a monk and must keep myself pure. I cannot stay with you on this island and so I shall find another.” “But of you are really pure,” the woman replied, “you will be able to prove your virtue in the midst of struggle and not far from it.” She was still speaking when the monk boarded his raft. From afar he replied, “For purity it is different. The cowards who flee from temptation are those who are victorious. With those words, the monk sailed away.
