COWBOY POETRY COMPETITION. Are you middle or high school youth? Do you love learning about the Cowboy way of life - the wild west? October 5, 2013 - Cowboy Poetry Competition is being held during the Cowboy Salute to Military Families. Here is the challenge: Students create Poetry that a Cowboy would be proud of! Each poem may have the opportunity to compete to win prize money at THE COWBOY SALUTE TO MILITARY FAMILIES – OCTOBER 5, 2013 – HAMPTON, GEORGIA – CALVIN CENTER. So what is Cowboy Poetry? It is the history of our great nation –put to prose, and the life of the Cowboy along side of each verse. At A Backpack Journalist – we include in our workshops and curriculum: Cowboy Poetry taught by real Cowboys. We have attended many Cowboy Poetry Gatherings, and each time, we come away loving even more the stories and the rhymes that are recited. The Cowboy poem must contain within the written prose, reference to the Cowboy lifestyle, a historical event or may also be “modern day” with referral to western culture. Once the poem is written, the student must be prepared to recite it live and on stage at the October 5, 2013 COWBOY SALUTE to Military Families. Our judges will not only review the poem, but also the recital, as the true Cowboy Poet – recites! The earliest poem on record was written in the late 1700’s by an Englishman (Cowboy). As the story goes, at night after a long day on the range, the Cowboy would lay by the camp fire and put to prose the day’s events. An Internet search will net multiple links to Cowboy Poems that you may use for reference. A Backpack Journalist has a module available for purchase: Cowboy Poetry. Here in Georgia, there are several recognized Cowboy Poets, and they are involved with this competition and available for a school visit. The competition is divided into Middle School and High School and Best of Show. Complete rules/registration info will be available by August 1, 2013. All poems entered will receive a $10 gift card and all accepted for recitation will be in the final competition for the grand prize money ($250/$350/$500 – then grand prize of show $1,000). The competition sponsor is The Bankers Fidelity of Georgia, and a main event at this fundraiser on October 5! For more information and details: cowboy@abackpackjournalist
