CPL/ATPL knowledge applied: Today we flew over Irans airspace. It is very congested because Iraqs airspace is closed for civil air traffic. To accommodate more traffic ATC assigned us a lateral offset to the right of 6 miles. Faster traffic behind us (all traffic behind our Citation V is faster...) was assigned a left offset and could pass us without an altitude change with the required lateral separation. The FMS flies this to greatest precision. You can even determine the waypoint where the offset is terminated and the aircraft will assume the normal flight path. It is sometimes important to dig into the manuals of your FMS or GPS.
