CPU scout bags national honors ILOILO City -- Fifteen-year-old Kleio Alfric Tobias of Central Philippine University (CPU) was chosen as one of the Ten Outstanding Boy Scouts (TOBS) of the Philippines, the country’s most prestigious scouting honor. Tobias, a native of the municipality of Cabatuan, was also the first Boy Scout from Western Visayas to receive the Ave Maria Cross Award given by the BSP’s Catholic National Scouting Committee. The other TOBS awardees were Francis Eirick Tamayo of Dagupan City; David Leonard Guzman, Tuguegarao City; John Dennhel Cruz and Adrian Paul San Andres, Bulacan; Hanns Christian Chua, Manila; John Carlo Prieto, Marinduque; Elmer Delen, Batangas City; Hans Juris Artillero, Capiz; and Justin Mikhael Hermosisima, Cebu. Winners of the search were presented the TOBS medal, cash, and scholarship during the national awarding ceremonies held at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City on Monday. Vice President Jejomar Binay, BSP president, urged the awardees to always lead in promoting nationalism. “I want you to help this society find its way to a better future. I want you to lead, share with everyone your wisdom and courage to bring change through your good work —big or small— that will inspire our younger members to discover and own the big idea of patriotism, and the even bigger idea of nationalism,” said Binay. Binay described the TOBS as the “sweetest fruits of Scouting’s labor.” Tobias, son of seafarer Toby Tobias and the former Maria Myla Silorio, is a fourth year Special Science Class student of CPU. A consistent honor student, he holds the rank of Senior Crew Leader in the boy scouts and is a member of the executive board of the BSP Iloilo (Confesor) Council. The Search for the Ten Outstanding Boy Scouts of the Philippines is a yearly awarding ceremony, which aims to give due recognition to the most outstanding Scouts, possessing qualities of role models to the youth. The winners are chosen from the 23 finalists representing the 10 Scouting Regions in the country and were selected from among the hundreds of candidates from 117 local councils nationwide.
