CROSS COUNTRY: Fast Freshman; Laingsburg frosh Kingsbury runs seventh at Early Burg By STEPHEN BROOKS, Argus-Press Sports Writer | 0 comments LAINGSBURG — The 2014 cross country season kicked off in hot and humid conditions Friday for Laingsburg and Perry at the Laingsburg Early Burg Invitational. The Ramblers earned a sixth-place finish in the boys race and the girls placed ninth while the host Wolfpack came away with a pair of seventh-place finishes. Despite both teams finishing near the middle of the pack or lower in the overall standings, the coaches liked what they saw from their runners in the season-opening event. “I was very pleased,” Laingsburg coach Mal Balow said. “The kids competed in very hot weather. ... I couldnt be prouder of our young runners all the way to our senior runners. (I’m) very, very pleased on the boys side. The girls side, they ran very hard. They set goals, they achieved goals and in this high heat they listened to their coaches and drank water.” The Laingsburg boys’ effort was sparked by freshman Ryan Kingsbury’s seventh-place finish with a time of 17:54.8 which junior Jacob Rouse followed up with a 19:08.1 time that placed him 26th overall. Jacob Danek, Alex Sperry and Trevor Klatt rounded out the Wolfpack’s five best times. Rouse noted the humid conditions Friday were relatively typical for the Early Burg Invitational, but not the majority of meets throughout the season. “Its a pretty substantial (challenge),” he said of the heat. Perry junior Parker Stuart joined Kingsbury in the top 20, checking in at No. 17 by clocking a 18:44.8. The Ramblers had five runners in the top 50: Stuart, Jordan DePew, Reese Middleton, James Legacy and Cooper Heminger. “My team has a lot of potential, so well definitely get in better shape throughout the year,” Perry coach Carl Willits said. “Im very pleased with them. A couple guys almost ran their (personal record times) out there.” In the girls race, junior Julia Angst paced Laingsburg with a 15th-place finish and 21:59.7 time. Behind her for the Wolfpack was senior Emily Garner placing 26th, sophomore Peyton Fleming at No. 34, freshman Gracie Bayle at No. 53 and Hanna Angst at No. 66. Two Rambler runners, juniors Katie Figueras and Abigail Dollar, were among the top 20 runners, checking in at 16th and 20th, respectively. “(The team was) real nervous at first, but theyre excited to be finally racing again,” Willits said. “So it was good to see where we have to go from here.” Julia Angst LAINGSBURG’S JULIA ANGST (184) is pictured competing at Friday’s Laingsburg Early Burg Invitational.
