CROWDSOURCE: Im driving myself nuts trying to think of what kind of shrub to put into our back yard. Weve got two spaces were looking to fill, but space is a commodity, so we have to make the selection very carefully. The first spot were looking to fill with a low, spreading shrub; Ive almost got my mind set on a dwarf juniper variety for this space, but a few other shrubs (dwarf mockorange) are possiblities. Theres an old-fashioned rosebush that is growing behind it, so high is limited. The second spot is the one causing me a headache, however. We want to plant a narrow shrub that can be a bit taller (eventually six to about ten feet, give or take) *but*... it has to be narrow, it cant be super-deadly poison (eg. no daphnes), and most difficult to work around, it has to tolerate moderate shade (our fence is a shadowbox, but doesnt permit much light, so calling this part of the yard part sun would be a stretch). Our yard already has a ton of hydrangeas, so those are out. Id say the priorities aethetically is winter interest and ideally fragrance. Show flowers and even foliage are a bit less of a consideration, because well have annual and perennial beds at the base. A few Id originally considered were a lilac, an elder, or a dogwood, but they all might become too massive, and Id worry about their shade tolerance. I had considered something potentially more rampant, like possibly honeysuck, which we would hope be held in check by the amount of shade, but I dont know if thats a wise bet. So... thoughts?
