CRPF move out of Gagran camp Cabinet decision fully implemented: DC Shopian Killings Aftermath Shopian, Oct 8: Complying with the State Cabinet directions, the Central Reserve Police Force Tuesday completed the relocation of their 14 Battalion personnel from Gagran camp in this South Kashmir district. “The entire CRPF Battalion camped in the industrial unit buildings in Gagran were shifted to District Police Lines,” officials said. They said that IRP 18 Battalion of J&K Armed Police has replaced the CRPF men. “A Deputy Superintendent of Police, Armed Police, will be the camp commander,” they said. Officials said though the process of relocation of the personnel had started soon after the Cabinet orders last month; the process took some three weeks as some of the buildings in DPL, where CRPF men were shifted, needed repairs. Speaking to Greater Kashmir, Deputy Commissioner Shopian, Bashir Ahmad Bhat confirmed the relocation of the entire CRPF Battalion. “The Cabinet decision has been fully implemented and the camp has been completely shifted to DPL,” said the DC. The demand for relocation of the camp was made by local residents following the killing of five persons and injuries to three others in CRPF firing in two different incidents on September 7 and 11. While police said four among the deceased were civilians and fifth a Lashkar operative, locals maintained he was a non-local laborer. Following the killings, the Cabinet ordered the shifting of the camp. The locals had also accused the CRPF men of the same camp of atrocities and killings in past and demanded its immediate removal. Even after curfew was lifted in Shopian town after 15 days following the incident, a continuous shutdown was observed for seven days against the killings and for immediate removal of the CRPF camp. A joint committee consisting of traders, transporters, fruit growers, lawyers was formed which pressed for immediate removal of the camp. The inhabitants of Gagran set October 10 as the deadline for removal of the camp failing which they threatened of mass migration. Meanwhile, the locals in Gagran have termed the decision of shifting of the personnel as a welcome step. The joint committee also welcomed the step but demanded action against the CRPF men involved in killings.
