CTC received a grant that helped us acquire ipads for use in therapy and it we are amazed at the ways in which the technology can help our students. Heres one fantastic success story that occurred recently in the office: David is a preschooler diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, full of mischievous smiles and the boundless energy to match. He has the ability to say only two words and sign four, but beyond that most of his communication is through pointing, gesturing, and pulling his communicative partner towards the item of interest. At least, that was the only way he could communicate with us at Therapy and Fun until we received a generous grant from the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Outstate Michigan. Three weeks after we purchased iPads for use in therapy, David came into the staff room eagerly brandishing one in a bright green cover. He stopped in front of me, focusing intently, before tapping on a series of pictures on the screen. Do you like dogs? the iPad diligently relayed in its computerized voice. David looked up at me, grinning widely and expectantly. “I love dogs,” I responded, thrilled to see David speaking with me for the first time. But he frowned, shook his head, and spent another few moments tapping out a response. “I do not like dogs,” the iPad relayed. “I like cats.” I laughed and assured him that I liked cats too and watched as he cheerfully marched to another staff member, already tapping out a new question as he went. Thank you, Ronald McDonald House of Outstate Michigan, for making conversations like this possible for the children in our program. We are deeply grateful.
