Ca. early 1950s: Max Grays original grocery & general store in Cahaba Heights. Even with my often sketchy memory I can recall my grandfather once saying something to Mrs. Gray in this store that made me very proud - a wonderful, private memory of my Papa. I was taken here every Saturday and given $1.00 to spend. That was a lot for a kid back in those days! When Max still had this tiny store (on Pump House / Cahaba Road - next to Widemans Creek), the ONLY other store in Cahaba Heights was the Hardware Store. Thats it. Just those 2 stores. (This photo is from the 29 May 1957 issue of the SHADES VALLEY SUN which had a special section on Max Gray opening up his new super market and shopping center - about 1/2 block southeast of this old place. Within a very few years of that grand opening, Western Super Markets bought him out.)
