Cairns back in 1974, had no traffic lights and a very small airport. Most of the boats going to the Great Barrier Reef back then, were clinker built mono hulls, especially Hayles blue boats to Magnetic Island and Green Island. This was about the time Peter Boundy (PB) owner of Cairns Dive Centre started professional diving instead of swinging a hammer. On 21st May 1982 in San Diego, PB became an Open Water Instructor. Recently PB was awarded a plaque of recognition from PADI for 30 years’ service to the organisation. In 2012 he had been a PADI member for 30 years. It won’t be long until he sees similar from NAUI and SSI as well. Here is photo of PB’s Dive School team outside the new dive shop on the Cairns Esplanade back in 1982. Moritz (LHS) PB (centre) & Rick (LHS). The interesting part is that the guys still work and have fun together with other longer term team members at Cairns Dive Centre ensuring guests and visitors to the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns have great experiences & memories to take home with them!
