Calabar Airport leaks badly, contractor abandons remodeling work from mycrossriver. If you are travelling through the Margaret Ekpo International Airport in Calabar this rainy season, better take along with you an umbrella or raincoat as you leave your house. However, if you choose to take this advice for granted, you will ,to your chagrin discover that from the moment you step into the main lobby at the airport to book for your flight and the time the flight takes off, you would have become so drenched such that your journey will become a nightmare rather than a worthwhile experience. Mycrossriver was at the airport on Thursday afternoon and was taken aback with the large volume of water that comes through the roof down to the floor of virtually every compartment in the airport: the arrival hall, the departure hall, the main lounge and it is even worse upstairs where the NAMA offices and Control Tower are located The water which was still coming down several hours after the rain had stopped left everywhere water lodged making movement from one point to the other tricky and dangerous as the floor was slippery and treacherous. Though a team of energetic cleaners deployed by a private company, Lakewood were strenuously trying to mop the water on the floor, its sheer volume and ample space made it an uphill task for them to cope. Outside the leaking roof, the walls of the edifice at opposite ends, the one facing the Federal Fire Service and the side facing the Federal Government Girls Secondary School are being constantly battered by rain in addition to the large volume of water pouring on them through openings created on the roof. Investigation by our reporter revealed that since the sack of Mrs Stella Oduah as Minister of Aviation, the contractor who is said to be one of her cronies called Architect Tony has abandoned the remodeling work at the airport. Though some of his labourers are still hanging around the airport, his key staff and equipment have since been moved several months ago. Several calls on his gsm number 08052400200 were not answered. “This shows the contempt and disdain people have for Cross River State or how else can one explain a situation where a contractor abandons remodeling work at a very critical stage and exposing people to unmitigated risk”, Agnes, a staff of one of the agencies at the airport said. She said other airports like Benin and Port Harcourt for which the remodeling work started at the same time have long been completed. “In fact the Benin Airport as you step in the door opens and shuts on its own but here in Calabar, the work has become a risk on the lives of travelers” When contacted, the Airport Manager, Alhaji Mahmud Sani said “work is ongoing and we hope it will be completed soon”
