Call for Papers Cultural and rhetorical aspects of political populism Conference in Jyväskylä on 24–25 October 2014 In Finland as elsewhere in Europe, populist political movements have gained visibility on the political scene. Rapid social change, multicultural challenges, social inequality, and the way different kinds of threat are disseminated by the media for public imagination, have given rise to populist protests and appeals to cultural values usually combining anti-elite and anti-immigrant nationalism with nationally and locally bounded demands of social justice. However, there are as yet few studies that would address the various cultural backgrounds of populist movements and the role of rhetorical and discursive strategies in their appeal and success. This two-day conference explores populism from cultural and rhetorical perspectives. The speakers in the conference are Senior lecturer Eoin Devereux (University of Limerick, Ireland), Prof. Sirpa Leppänen (University of Jyväskylä, Finland), Prof. Jim McGuigan (University of Loughborough, U.K.), and Prof. Ruth Wodak (Lancaster University, U.K.). In addition to the lectures, the programme consists of working groups. The papers invited for the working groups may deal with any issues connected with populist rhetoric or with wider questions having to do with the cultural aspects of populism. Please send 300-word abstracts to [email protected] before Friday 12 September, 2014. A letter of possible acceptance by e-mail will reach you next week. Add a brief note on you affiliation, scholarly background, and (possible) project having to do with the topic of the conference. Presentations in the conference will be 20 minutes in length (plus 10 minutes for discussion). Papers will be commented upon and discussed by the distinguished lecturers. The conference will be held in the University of Jyväskylä. The organisers are: Academy of Finland project “Populism as movement and rhetoric”, Department of Art and Culture Studies, University of Jyväskylä, and Society for Cultural Studies in Finland. A one-day pre-conference course on populist rhetoric for PhD students will be arranged 23 October in the University of Jyväskylä. Teacher of the course: Eoin Devereux. For preliminary registration for the course, please send a short note to [email protected]. Further information will follow. Participation in the conference and the pre-conference course is free of charge.
