Call for Papers – Contemporary Outsider Art: The Global Context Arts Project Australia in partnership with The University of Melbourne present: CONTEMPORARY OUTSIDER ART THE GLOBAL CONTEXT An international conference to be held at the University of Melbourne 24, 25 & 26 October 2014 40 years after the term “Outsider Art” was coined by Roger Cardinal to encompass works by untrained artists who work outside the established art world, new paradigms and definitions are being sought. The current enthusiasm for these forms of expression culminated in Massimiliano Gioni’s 2013 Venice Biennale, which dedicated several exhibits to self-taught or Outsider artists. Reviewing the Biennale in Art and America, Travis Jeppesen wrote “the success of Gioni’s bold production signals a move beyond ‘the contemporary’ as the default category we have relied upon for far too long.” Such comments demonstrate the timeliness of this topic and the potential for this conference to contribute to and enrich our understanding of contemporary culture at the broadest level. The increased interest in Outsider Art, however, has also raised a number of significant questions in response to which “Contemporary Outsider Art: The Global Context” proposes an inter-disciplinary exploration of the field, drawing on the experience and knowledge of Australian and international artists, collectors, curators and scholars. The conference will consist of keynote addresses, sessions of 30-minute papers and round table discussions where presenters from different disciplines and backgrounds will be asked to engage with the topics relating to the three major themes of the conference: // The Practices of Outsider Artists // Collections of Outsider Art and Curated Exhibitions // Outsider Art History and Theory Contemporary Outsider Art: The Global Context invites artists, curators, collectors and scholars to deliver papers on Outsider Art in Europe, North America, Asia or Oceania and may consider the following issues: • The experiences of Outsider Artists and how their processes of making are distinctive • How contexts affect the practice and reception of Outsider Artists • Ethical considerations that are important for Outsider Artists • The drivers of contemporary collecting and the market for Outsider Art • Issues faced by public and private collectors in acquiring and conserving Outsider works • Models for exhibiting Outsider Art and for showing alongside other forms of art • The relationship between Outsider Art and the mainstream world to which it relates • Current issues arising in the definition of the field • The effects of Outsider Art’s institutionalization and commodification on the meaning of works • Approaches to curating Outsider Art and working with living artists • Indigenous art practice in relation to Outsider Art Selected papers will be published in a conference proceedings. Please send conference paper abstracts of 250 words and a 100 word biographical statement with your name and email address to the convenors by close of business, February 26, 2014.
