Call it enhanced interrogation techniques. Call it means to protect national security interests. Torture is torture. Period. Those in power and who lord over that power over others in destructive ways do so with the principle, whether spoken or unspoken but certainly assumed and premised: -the ends justify the means; -non-notification or selective notification to superiors so plausible deniability can be claimed; -the specter of secrecy will cloak what is actually being said and done; -the perception that the benefit to the greater good outweighs the risk, the damage, the shadow of death (and death itself) inflicted upon another human being or the body politic. Again and again, over and over, we see this again, in Church and in society. In this Advent season, may the light of the Word made flesh intrude into the world, piercing hearts, illuminating truth, changing lives. No more torture. No more enhanced interrogation techniques. No more police brutality. No more violence against women. No more violence against the vulnerable in our society. No more shadow corporations and diversion of church funds. No more. Period.
