Call me old fashioned and lets face it many of you have over the years, but I’m a firm believer in the good that public service can do; and also over the last week I’ve been reminded a lot of something my granddad use to say “you pay peanuts you get monkeys”. I strongly believe that politicians are elected to get things done on a policy program they lead and officers at the town hall or civil servants in Whitehall should follow. So lets look at the recent announcement over the pay increase for senior officials at Rochdale; I know I’m going to be in a minority hear but I’m not against the council chief exec salary being increased, but does anyone strongly believe that Rochdale Council is any more a shinning example of good governance then it was under the coalition of Conservative and liberals that were in power before them or the lib dem’s before them. Because the answer is no it’s not. At the very heart of Rochdale political and civic society is a blob that is unresponsive and it has got to be tackled with a political agenda based on real change so I hope come next May that’s what we are offered I some how doubt it.
