Called Design and Violence, it is an online curatorial experiment whose purpose is to explore the idea of violence in contemporary society using design objects as prompts for wider questions and reflections. For a more detailed explanation, please see: designandviolence.moma.org/about/ We are inviting experts from fields as diverse as science, philosophy, literature, music, film, journalism, and politics to respond to a checklist of carefully selected design objects and concepts, and to spark a conversation with all readers. We have already received materials (images and video) from over 50 designers and artists, as well as short essays from great authors--among them, Anne-Marie Slaughter, William Gibson, Arianna Huffington, Steven Pinker, John Thackara, Camille Paglia, Robert Krulwich, Cintra Wilson, Rob Walker, Jad Abumrad, Anab Jain, John Hockenberry, and Bruce Sterling--who have shared their reaction to designated objects and projects from our checklist. We are awaiting essays from Gayatri Spivak, Taryn Simon, Peter Galison, Susan Yelavich, and more. The growing roster is diverse and promising. We are launching today with four posts and we will publish two new examples a week for the first month, and one example each week thereafter. At the bottom of each post, we will ask a provocative question about violence. We would like each post to spark an online discussion about the manifestations of violence in contemporary society, prompted by the design object and by the experts reaction. We will moderate this discussion and invite comments to get the discussion started, if necessary. The experiment will be ongoing and we hope that the site will become a universal donor to those interested in pursuing the conversation, in all its possible forms.
