Calling 9-1-1 will soon mean a charge to Alabama phone bills. That’s actually good news for some folks. The $1.60 charge replaces several monthly fees that range from .70 cents to more than five dollars. Alabama’s 9-1-1 Board says this new charge means all customers pay the same amount for 9-1-1 services. The state’s 88 emergency phone systems will split the fee to cover operational costs. The new fee takes affect October 1st.
