Calling Universiti Malaya alumni, Please stand with the current students of courage! As you will know, Azmi Sharoms sedition charge has heightened activism for academic freedom and freedom of speech. The academic staff union (PKAUM), in conjunction with the students organization (PMUM), organized the Sept 2 rally and two subsequent forums, on academic freedom and past academic repression. As events under PKAUM, there is no need to seek UM administrations permission. However, the students have organized a talk by Anwar Ibrahim on Oct 27. PMUM is venturing boldly to claim the university as a public space that is theirs (ours) and hence events there are not subject to university managements overlording whims. PMUM is spotlighting Anwar as an alumnus who was persecuted in the 1970s as a student activist. malaysiakini/news/278119 Oh no, a politician speaking on campus!?!? Keep calm and reject BN hypocrisy. Recently, UMNO MP Nur Jazlan spoke at a peaceful campus gathering. However one feels about Anwar, he has as much right as Nur Jazlan or any politician, or any citizen. themalaysianinsider/malaysia/article/umno-men-debate-the-reasons-behind-the-dearth-of-scholars-in-malaysia Dear alumni, especially you who write publicly and boldly, or who can round up your cohort and other alumni, please make a stand for freedom of speech and academic freedom, and against campus autocracy in your alma mater! Please consider writing a letter to editors, especially with co-signed alumni, or a column or blog. Thank you!
