Caltrans News Release 10-8-13 HIGHWAY 1 SAND SEAL TESTING SHOW FAVORABLE RESULTS WITH FULL RESURFACING NOW PLANNED BETWEEN CAMBRIA AND SAN LUIS OBISPO/MONTEREY COUNTY LINE SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY – A sand seal treatment has proven to be successful in smoothing a test section of Highway 1 in northern San Luis Obispo County. A full re-surfacing of Highway 1 from Cambria to the San Luis Obispo/Monterey County line using a sand seal will begin in the next few weeks and take a few weeks to complete, weather permitting. “Based on the research done this summer, we expected the sand seal to improve the smoothness of Highway 1 and are pleased that the latest test results allow us to move forward with this project,” said Caltrans District 5 Director Tim Gubbins. The selection of this sand seal surface treatment follows work by the UC Davis Pavement Research Center and Caltrans that tested eight sections of surface treatment on State Route 198 in Monterey County earlier this year. According to feedback from cyclists and specialized equipment used to measure the texture of the highway, sand seal provided a satisfactory improvement to ride quality. The sand seal to be used is a sprayed application of asphalt emulsion followed by a covering of clean sand or fine aggregate. CalPortland of Santa Maria will perform the full $1.5 million resurfacing of Highway 1. Caltrans will continue to inform the public, elected officials and the cycling community about the progress of this construction project with the dates, times, and lane closures to be announced.
