Calvados Lagoon Solar Light Project 2013: Project Manager’s - TopicsExpress

Calvados Lagoon Solar Light Project 2013: Project Manager’s Report: Hans Ole Clemmensen This idea for this project started in 2012 while I was cruising Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea on my yacht “Seagoon”. When I left Milne Bay in October I asked all the councel members to contact their local president or MP Gordon Wesley, to help me get the word out on what I am trying to achieve. As it turn out nobody lifted a finger to help, well that is the PNG way. Over the last 20 years I had spent 18 years cruising The South West Pacific, I had spent a lot of time repairing cheap solar lights, given to the people by me and other yachts or even good solar lights. One big problem all the lights had was a weak switch or plug in the wire from solar panel that then failed due to miss use by children or grownups. The way I was going to set up lights in the houses would be a little different as I would only install one switch for all the lights, and only have one man to look after the battery, switch and solar panels. At the same time it would all be installed up high in the house, that way the kids would not have asses the switch or wiring. Only time will tell if will last. I did try to get the people to pay a small fee toward maintaining the lights without much luck, I did tell them that I would not repair or pay for new lights if they failed. 2014 I plan to have lights for sale in 2 shops in The Calvedos Lagoon and Misima Island, and then they can buy them at any time. While at Grass Island I spend some time talking to the former local Shire President Andrew Sigoyoni (Chairman Yeleyamba Rural LLG) we wrote out a submission to the member for parliament Hon. Gordon Wesley, M.P, trying to get some founding towards solar panels and batteries via the members “Village Healthy Living” concept. Money for the rest of the project I thought I could find myself from my savings and by buying it all on EBay at a good price. At the same time I thought it was a good time to start given back to the people after all their generosity they had shown me over the years. Village installations June – October 2013 Calvados lagoon: When I was looking for a village to install lights, I tried to find houses close together So I could wire in more houses.
