Campaign for 16th October – Hunger day The organization for food and agriculture of the UN estimates that there are 805.000.000 nugry people in the world. This means they regularly do not have enough food to live active lives. The number of hungry people in the world is even greater if we include those who face seasonal food shortages or those who eat a varied diet that includes protein, vitamins and minerals. An estimated 26 percent of children in the world have problems in their development due to malnutrition, 2 billion people suffer from lack of nutrients. Each year nearly 5 million children under the age of 5 die from malnutrition. World Hunger Day is celebrated to raise awareness of people about the problem of hunger, as well as the achievements of millions of people who have already overcome the problem of hunger and met basic needs. World Hunger Day aims to inspire people in developed and developing countries to show their solidarity and provide support to enable many people to overcome the problem of hunger and poverty and to become independent. Macedonian Red Cross on this occasion joined the celebration on 16 October by organizing a campaign under the motto Think of us. With the campaign, as with many other humanitarian activities, Macedonian Red Cross will contribute to the overall efforts made by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy to reduce the poverty and social exclusion of citizens as one of the main goals of the Strategy, a document that reflects the intention of the Republic of Macedonia to even the level of involvement and well-being through all layers of society. Within the campaign there will be organized charity events providing donations in cash and food in cooperation with educational institutions, civil societies, and the support of companies and citizens. These activities will be implemented during the week 16 to 23 October by the Red Cross Branches and the Red Cross of Skopje. The donated funds from the humanitarian actions, will be used to provide food assistance to vulnerable populations and will be distributed through the Red Cross.
