Can anyone relate to how lonely, frustrating, exhausting, and hurtful one-sided friendships can be? You know the ones where you are always the one being asked to give, listen to and pray about their concerns and issues, with no reciprocation from them or concern for whats going on in your life. Ive prayed to have close friends for years, -the kind that you invest in, get to know each other mutually and share what true friends share, -the good, the bad and the ugly. Ive even had some of those kinds of friends, but moving and life situations have caused them to mellow and fade. Scripture says a man that has friends must himself be friendly, Proverbs 18:24a. Ive always interpreted that to mean, if you want to have friends, then you yourself must be friendly. Ive tried to live by this. But the disappointment and one-sided relationships still reign. I have been living in the disappointment of those non relationships that have left me wanting more, -a sisterhood, the give and take of true friendship. I discovered that I had missed the last part of that verse in Proverbs. It says, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24b. Ive heard that part all my life but never in relation to the first part. Christ is the only one who can fulfill that role. Every other relationship will at some point fall short. Ive discovered that earthly friendships will disappoint, discourage, and even bring despair. Im grateful to know One who doesnt disappoint, never sleeps, longs to hear my hearts cry, and runs to my rescue when I call. I will still be the friend that God has called me to be to others, knowing that He has my back as only a real friend does. This makes me more grateful for the real friends I do have. So thankful for you, Amy Stump Phillips who always remembers to ask about my life, even though so much is going on in your own. Im amazed at what you remember about our passing conversations! Thanks for being there when Ive needed a friend and prayer warrior!
