Can breastfeeding moms support formula feeding moms? Can formula feeding moms support breastfeeding moms? Is it possible to believe in supporting all mothers as individual people regardless of how they are feeding their babies? We certainly believe so. Amy West thinks so too and carefully looks at the criticism we sometimes see of those that place supporting moms before the dogma of a feeding modality. Have you heard of #ISupportYou? It got a nice mention in Suzanne Barston’s recent guest post on this site about what to do with unsolicited formula samples. (Yes, she’s the The Fearless Formula Feeder.) I came across a post criticizing a suggestion from that post, that moms could play “Coupon Fairy.” Yes, I’ll actually agree that taking on the responsibility of ensuring those coupons reach the moms who need them actually perpetuates Big Formula marketing. Big Formula marketing is the reality in which we’re living. Formula is a reality or a choice for many families, and it’s not up to me to hold any judgment over the parents and caregivers who use it. If I have $5 in free formula money sitting on my desk, that could help a mom who’s shopping paycheck-to-paycheck to feed her baby. I’m going to give it to her. For me, easing that very real burden for her is more important than strategic moves against a multi-million dollar marketing machine. Formula marketing will evolve beyond what it is today. Putting the unsolicited coupons they send me in the trash isn’t going to have any bearing on that evolution, but it could have a lot of impact for the mom who really needs that five bucks. Yes, I’d like to change a LOT about how formula is marketed, but in the meantime, I’m working with what we’ve got.
