Can life really get any more absurd and intense? Returning from an amazing weekend at ArtsWells, thanks to Julie Fowler , Paul Crawford, and all the amazing musicians and attendees who created such an inspiring collective state of united bliss, to find that one of the worst man made environmental disasters just occurred in my hometown backyard in Likely...the tailings pond of a large mine emptied its contents of 15 years accumulated toxic mining waste into the immense and beautifully pristine Quesnel Lake. So happy that only days ago we swam and canoed these waters, drank the water as we swam, gazed in awe at the sheer volume of crystal clear water that flowed every second from this gem, while so much of the world thirsts. We spent two nights on Cariboo island where we saw otters, eagles, 5lb trout and char, and found an ancient arrowhead on the beach. Swam in the river and had a heron fly close to us as we pondered names for our unborn child. Now, so much uncertainty as we prepare to bring another into the world, with so much love and joy and wonder and excitement, what will be the world this one lives through?? Will these waters ever be the same waters I swam in as a child? Is there any way to mitigate this disaster? And who is to blame? Government? Industry? Those of us who knew better, but felt helpless to hold those responsible to account? I dreamt of this happening many years ago, I was walking downtown Likely, and the air smelled foul, the water was yellowed, and a sense of catastrophe hung in the air, that predicted a collapse of society on a grand scale. I knew in my dream that when this happens, it was to herald dark days. Unbelievably, against all the assurances of government and company officials, this nightmare has come true. I am convinced now, more than ever, that we need to commune with like minded souls to create a new reality, independent of the greater society that demands growth at all costs, like a cancer, for economic well being. We will find these people at the festivals and farmers markets, the artists and land workers that can see the possibilities for a better future by working together as one entity, instead of competitively against one another for profit at the expense of others and the Earth. Mama Gaia, you who give us everything, I am sorry for what we have done, have allowed to happen. May this be a wake up call for us all.
