Can some people please pass an opinion on some things that Im finding really disturbing and confirm Im not missing something here? There is corporation that is a registered charity called the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Britain. Its accounts show a net total of £40,000,000 turnover. Their accounts are published here jwleaks.files.wordpress/2012/07/2012-wtbtsb-financial-report.pdf. The corporations self confessed objectives, taken from charityperformance/charity-details.php?id=16715 state; The objects of the Society, contained in its Memorandum and Governing document, are to advance the Christian religion as practiced by the body of Christians known as Jehovah’s Witnesses. This is accomplished by the following specific sub-objects: a. promoting the preaching of the gospel of God’s Kingdom under Jesus Christ in all nations as a witness to the name, word and supremacy of the Almighty God, JEHOVAH; b. producing and distributing Bibles and other religious literature, in any medium, and educating the public in respect thereof; c. promoting religious worship; d. promoting Christian missionary work; e. advancing religious education; f. maintaining one or more religious orders or communities of special ministers of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Hmmmm, not a hint of charity mentioned their... My concerns are; 1. Is a charity, and charity status in the UK able to be exclusively self fulfilling? For example, can I start and organisation/corporation that fulfils my own (religious?) idyll and those that follow that idyll and then register it as a charity? 2. In my entire life I have never seen any active UK based Jehovah Witness charitable behaviour advertised or, realised in any media, internet or, public event/activity, other than what is directed at registered followers of the Jehovah Witness religion. Has anybody seen any behaviour from Jehovahs that could be deemed as charitable? I would love to hear about it. 3, As a result of the Bible Tract Society being a registered charity, it eligible for Gift Aid. Gift Aid works as a Tax relief for charities. Put simply, every pound that a charity accounts for, the UK Government will pay the registered charity back 25p. Am I wrong in assuming the Bible Tract Society get a cheque from the UK Government for around £10,000,000? 4. Based on this information being somewhere near correct, why am I and millions of other people who dont agree with this funding the Jehovah Witness religion, and possibly many other strange and wacky organisations/corporations like it. Some schools and hospitals and roads without holes in would seem far more appropriate way of spending £10m. Is it my imagination or this is a scam and travesty of human rights and not democratic in any way or form? More information on this matter can be found here; hmrc.gov.uk/charities/gift_aid/basics.htm#1 jwleaks.files.wordpress/2012/07/2012-wtbtsb-financial-report.pdf. charityperformance/charity-details.php?id=16715 jwleaks.files.wordpress/2012/07/2012-wtbtsb-charity-commission-summary-information.pdf
