Can someone please tell me how I can find out if my tap water is - TopicsExpress

Can someone please tell me how I can find out if my tap water is safe for long term use of watering my bonsai? I did a P.H. Test and it tested perfectly neutral right about 6.5. I was hoping if the water is exceptionally high in something like lime, sulfur, or iron the P.H. Would be way high or way low. Most of the time I let the water stand for 24-48 hours or longer before use to allow any impurities evaporate that will and heavies to sink like lime and iron but I would like to know exactly what is in the water and at what ppm not only for the plants but to know since its our tap water too. I used to use nothing but rain water for all my bonsai but I started getting black spot on all my elms and some other trees and I got rid of it thankfully but over time I realized my huge silver maple has black spot and that is where it was coming from. Before spring comes that tree will be cut down and gone but in the mean time I been using tap water and will have to continue using tap water all winter for dormant trees and for my tropicals. I would love a reverse osmosis system like some people have but I just dont have that kind of money. I though about building a still and distilling all my water and storing it in a couple 55 gal plastic barrels but I dont want to get caught building or having a still! I believe we have pretty good tap water but I am not certain. I know it doesnt leave mineral deposits on the leaves, pots, or soil so surely it cant be that bad! I have bought trees from florida that were covered in white powdery residue from the water, that doesnt happen here. Any suggestions?
