Canada – The CIC (Citizenship & Immigration Canada) have confirmed that applications for extensions on work permits, requiring LMIAs (Labor Market Impact Assessment), may again now be filed while waiting for the LMIA to be approved. When the work permit is going to expire within two weeks the CIC will put the application on hold for 2 months while waiting for the LMIA approval. Should the LMIA not be approved within that 2 month period the application will be refused. Employers should initiate the LMIA process well in advance (at least several months prior to the expiry date of the employee’s work permit) to ensure that the approval is issued in time for the work permit extension application to be filed in a timely manner.
