Cancer Versus pH? Separating The Truth From The Myth. Many people hold onto the firm belief that diet is a main contributing factor towards the development of many of todays diseases, including cancer. However, there is an extension to this belief which states that raising the bodies pH to an alkaline state by following a specific diet can reverse a variety of these diseases. Is there any evidence to support this theory? We need to begin by looking at what an acidic diet is, and why it is considered unhealthy. As with everything else, every item of food that you put into your body has a relative pH. Examples of various acidic foods are candy, sweet drinks, caffeine, meat, milk, and so on, with alkaline foods genuinely being vegetables and other greenery. Abuse of many of the above acidic forms of food are well known to come with the risk of developing a variety of detrimental conditions, and therefore balancing this intake, whilst eating a healthy array of alkaline foods is considered to be an excellent way of preventing disease. After all, we were all told in school to eat our five a day. In 1931, Dr. Otto Warburg was awarded the Nobel Prize for providing evidence which showed that cancer cells cannot survive within an alkaline environment. Since, numerous pea-tree dish type preclinical studies have been performed confirming this finding. Because of this evidence, many people believe that by raising the bodies natural pH to a slightly alkaline level, it may be possible to reverse cancer. There is certainly a correlation between a healthy (alkaline) diet and prolonged health, but we need to dig deeper if we are to understand this correlation. One of the main protagonists of the alkaline adjustment diet is Dr. Leonard Coldwell. Several videos of an interview that Coldwell took part in were uploaded to youtube, were he made various wild claims such as table salt being made of one third glass, one third sand, and one third salt. Coldwell also stated that in his experience every cancer can be cured in a matter of weeks by simply adjusting ones diet. Aside from this, he also claimed that hemp seed oil can kill cancer cells, as opposed to cannabis oil itself. In actuality, five minutes of research reveals that Dr. Coldwell is actually a guy named Scott Mirliss, and is not a licenced doctor. The truth of the matter is, although an alkaline diet does correlate with what we consider to be a healthy diet, our kidneys naturally control our bodily pH and keep it at a level suitable to maintain homeostasis. With regards to effecting an organisms pH, eating more alkaline will only result in you passing more alkaline urine, as the kidneys continue to keep everything in check. Changing to a healthier diet can help to prevent disease, but it is not due to any change in pH, it is due to eating healthier. No cell, healthy or diseased, will survive for long in an over-alkaline environment. If a change in blood pH (not urine pH) were to occur within a patient, this would be a clear sign of kidney disease. People who suffer with kidney disease often experience a wild variation in their blood pH, and as a result, have to continuously adjust their diet and take medications such as sodium bicarbonate in order to neutralise any change in acidity. Although it may appear at first glance of the research surrounding cancer cells and bodily pH that this may be an efficient method of combating cancer, in reality, our bodies already maintain a healthy pH all by themselves. It is the process of healthy eating that can help to prevent disease from occurring.
