Candidate for Chatham County Commissioner Diana Hales on Charter Schools: All children living in Chatham County have a right to quality public education. Chatham has two distinguished charter schools, Woods Charter and Chatham Charter, that are serving students from Chatham and surrounding counties. A third charter, Willow Oak Montessori, opened last fall on Governors Drive and offers grades 1 through 3. These schools were established to provide an innovative approach to educating students. The vast majority of Chatham County students, however, attend our traditional public schools where every child is welcomed, without regard to their abilities or family circumstance. They, too, receive a rigorous education to help them succeed in life. Chatham County public schools and teachers deserve our thoughtful investment. There is no war between traditional public schools and the charter schools currently operating in Chatham when it comes to educating children. Traditional public schools offer lunches, transportation, and other equalizing services available to poorer students that may not be available through a charter school. Traditional public schools offer English as a Second language, essential in the western part of the county. Traditional public schools offer a curriculum that challenges students and reflects diversity. Parents should have choice in their childs education, and Chatham Countys traditional schools are achieving great results, one student at a time.
