Canon law thought of the night: Blah...Canon law...hate it and love it....super boring! Blah! Q: What happens if a Bishop violates a standard of the Church and punishes a priest with an unjust administrative act? In such case, the priest would have to petition the Vatican through a contentious administrative recourse beginning in canon law court. This I believe is handled in 1732-1739 in the code if memory serves me. Good luck handling this though! Rome is going to decide for the Bishop unless you have a clear violation of something that is demonstrable. In general, the Church stresses lawful obedience to ones superior. Only when the Bishop commands one to sin or violate a clear precept of the Church should a priest ever even consider administrative recourse.
