Cape Town Carnival an overwhelming success The City of Cape Town has once again hosted a hugely successful Cape Town Carnival. More than 20 000 people from diverse backgrounds descended on the Fan Walk for the annual event, one of Cape Town’s biggest street celebrations. Capetonians and visitors were fascinated by the colourful floats, outrageous costumes, and impressively choreographed dance routines. ‘The City is thrilled with the overwhelming local support for the event and happy to have delivered another incident-free parade. The Cape Town Carnival is one of the City’s key cultural events and a festival which has experienced significant growth over the past five years. The event has created over 600 temporary job opportunities, provides a boost for local entrepreneurs in the clothing industry and promotes cultural tourism, skills development, innovation and inclusivity,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Marketing, Councillor Grant Pascoe. The theme for this years parade was Imagine” and paid homage to the City’s title as World Design Capital (WDC) 2014. The carnival is an official WDC 2014 event, as it provides the opportunity for a shared celebration of cultural diversity and expression of creativity. The Cape Town Carnival makes design visible, participative and fun, and inspires people who have first-hand experience of design and creative expression.
