The Wanted opened the show by reuniting with band member Nathan Sykes as a surprise halfway through their opening set, after which special guest host Justin Timberlake officially launched this year’s capital FM event when he emerged from a traditional British red phone box. The ‘Suit & Tie’ singer looked dapper in a black tuxedo suit and was backed by a number of stiletto-wearing dancers as he made his way to the front of the Wembley Stadium crowd to address the crowd. “How we feeling out there London?” Justin said to kick off the show. “Welcome to the Capital Summertime Ball! After will.i.am’s huge performance Justin emerged from underneath the stage for an impromptu acoustic performance to deafening cheers from the 80,000 strong audience, beginning with his iconic single ‘Cry Me A River’ “We’re going to have a little sing-along tonight, what do you think? Justin cheekily told the crowd. “Anytime you want to sing-along with me.” Backed by a single guitarist, and playing an acoustic guitar himself, Justin gave an emotional stripped-back performance of the song with his epic vocals on true display. The ‘Mirrors’ singer went on to include snippets from some of the biggest songs in music history including ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ and ‘Heartbreak Hotel’, before asking the audience if they want to hear “another one”. When the crowd overwhelming responded positively Justin gave a cheeky smile before launching into a performance of ‘What Goes Around… Comes Around’. Justin Timberlake then rounded off his surprise performance by belting out a round of his recent single ‘Mirrors’ which the audience obligingly sang along with the US superstar.
