Capitol Insider | Study: Ohio 7th in political ad spending It didn’t seem like our TVs were taken over by political ads quite as much this year, but we Ohioans still were inundated with 69,500 commercials worth nearly $34 million that were broadcast on state government campaigns, a study by the Center for Public Integrity shows. Despite Ohio’s lack of competitive races, that still was the seventh-highest total in the United States for 2014, the center reported, using figures from Kantar Media/CMAG. Of Ohio’s total, more than $28 million was devoted to statewide races where more than 70 percent was on behalf of the Republican candidates. The GOP not only swept all the statewide spots in the election but won the TV ad war in every race, too. However, Attorney General Mike DeWine’s victory in the latter comes with an asterisk; while he outspent challenger David Pepper by $600,000, the Democrat actually had more spent on his behalf when the nearly $1 million from the dark money group Moving Ohio Forward is included.
