Capitol Police Lift Lockdown After Gunfire The United States Capitol was locked down around 2:30 p.m. Thursday after shots were fired in front of the building, where lawmakers were already on edge over the government shutdown. The lockdown was lifted about a half-hour later. “Gunshots have been reported on Capitol Hill requiring staff in all Senate office buildings to immediately shelter in place,” read an e-mail sent out by the Capitol Police. “Close, lock and stay away from external doors and windows.
