Capiz on alert vs. ‘Yolanda’ by Jemin B. Guillermo ROXAS CITY, Capiz, Nov. 7 (PIA)- The province of Capiz is on alert against super typhoon Yolanda. Capiz Governor Victor Tanco yesterday convened members of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to ensure preparation of every responding partner agency and organization to mitigate the impact of said disaster. The said special meeting was likewise attended by the action officers of the various Municipal and City DRRMCs. Tanco, during the meeting, announced the suspension of classes on Friday at all levels both in the private and public schools, however, early this morning today he declared the suspension of classes in the entire province. He said that all the response and rescue manpower and equipments are already on standby to augment the needs of localities here. Evacuation centers have likewise been readied for use of the evacuees anytime. “It’s better safe than be sorry,” said Tanco, urging all the local government officials to take all necessary measures such as preemptive or forced evacuation to ensure zero casualty. He also called on everyone to be alerted and take precautions against possible effects to life and properties of said super typhoon. He also encouraged everybody to pray and offer masses to spare the people from the impact of said disaster. On the other hand, the Philippine National Police, Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Fire Protection and all other key responding agencies are on alert status since yesterday. The heads of offices of said agencies have assured Tanco of their respective readiness in terms of manpower and rescue equipments. As of 10:18 last night, the Capiz PDRRMC Operation Center reported that 21 families or 98 persons from Madulano, an island barangay in President Roxas, Capiz evacuated to the town’s Civic Center due to strong winds, while another 10 families from Barangays Rosario and Binaobawan, Pilar, Capiz likewise evacuated to the Pilar Civic Center.
