Captain Leon Caraway from Big Sandy, TN. In an interview with the - TopicsExpress

Captain Leon Caraway from Big Sandy, TN. In an interview with the Benton Countian newspaper he said; In the Spanish American War I volunteered my services because I thought it was my duty to do so. I am still of the opinion that every able bodied man in our country should ever hold himself in readiness to answer the call to the flag. The most pitiable thing I can conceive of is a country without a citizenry that will defend it. The United States is not such a country. When the call comes I will answer it as I answered it before. If my services are needed in behalf of my country, family and friends, I will be found following wherever the flag leads. He graduated from Vanderbilt University at age 23 and was practicing law when he was mustered into the First Regiment TN. Infantry as a First Lieutenant. He was later promoted to Captain in the Spanish American War and served in the Philippines. When he died in 1939 he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Thanks to Ron DeBruce for this picture.
