Card effects Every magic set usually introduce new game mechanics. Some of them, lately, appear into other set and become common use effect. Here are some common card effects in modern format. Bloodthirst X: If any amount of legal damages was dealt to any opponent at any point in the current turn, before the creature with Bloodthirst is summoned to the battlefield, that creature will enter the battlefield with X +1/+1 permanent counter on itself. This ability usually appears Black, Red and Green creature to indicate their primeval and savage nature. Cycling: Card with cycling allow you to pay a specific amount of mana and discard itself to draw a new card. Deathtouch: Any creature that is dealt legal damage (>=1 damage) by a creature with Deathtouch will be destroyed, regardless its toughness. A small 1/1 creature with Deathtouch can easily take down a creature much larger than it. This ability usually appears in Green and Black. Defender: A creature with defender can not attack, it can only block. Creatures with defender usually have larger amount of power or toughness, usually toughness, compare to the average creatures with the same mana cost. Exalted: when a creature under your control attack alone, each permanent under your control with Exalted will give a +1/+1 temporary boost. A creature does not need to have exalted to receive this bonus, it just needs to attack alone during combat phase. The Exalted ability can stack with each other, giving the attacking creature a huge amount of power boost. This ability originally appear in White, Blue and Green, later, it also appear in Black. Fear/ Intimidate: The original key word is “Fear”, which means when the creature with Fear attacks, it can only be blocked by Black creatures or artifact creatures. The idea of this is that these creatures are fearsome so only the Black creatures without the fear of death or mindless artifact creature would dear to fight them. In the past, Fear only appears in Black creature, making them efficient invader. Later, Wizards redesign and change it into “Intimidate”. It means that when a creature with Intimidate attacks, non- artifact creatures or creature that does not share a color with it can not block it. This development expands to White, Red and Green. This is the key words for today, I will provide more of these in later post.
