Carl Wesley Smith, age 71, of Abingdon, VA, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born August 7, 1942 in Coeburn, VA, a son of the late Columbus and Beulah Dollarhide Smith. Carl was a U.S. Army Veteran. He lived in St. Paul, Virginia most of his life and in Abingdon since 1994. He lived with his daughter and son-in-law for the past 4 years. Carl was a Coal Chemist for 25 years at VIC Coal Company in Coeburn, VA. He attended Grace Pentecostal Church in Bristol, VA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Mary Jeanette Shirley Smith, four sisters Helen Harvey, Phyllis Fields, Lou Pleasant and Shirley Kennedy, two brothers Enoch and Bussy Smith and infant grandson Michael Lynn Cook. Survivors include: His Daughter: Loretta Lynn Steele and husband Dennis Ray Two Sisters: Gloria Townsend of Florida, and Linda Herd of Castlewood, VA Two Brothers: Charles Smith of Ohio, and Doug Smith of Castlewood, VA And PaPas Buddy: Carpentar The funeral service for Mr. Smith will be conducted 2 pm, Wednesday, March 19, 2014 in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Michael Switzer, Rev. Dennis Steele and Brother David Horton officiating. Burial will follow the service at Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, VA with military honors conducted by the Bristol VFW Honor Guard. Pallbearers include Roscoe Nunley, Tommy Kennedy, Bradley White, Jerry Yaneles, Jonathan Saltz and Glen Saltz. Honorary pallbearers include David Goody, Jim Wood, Tony Olinger and all other men of Grace Pentecostal Church. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6 pm to 8 pm at the funeral home. The family would also like to thank all the Bristol, VA Walmart employees and customers that helped the family and Bristol Life Saving Crew and also Bristol Regional Medical Center, Hospital ER Staff also Dr. Neff and all others who helped in Mr. Smiths healthcare. A special thank you to Brother Michael Switzer for being at the hospital with the family at the time of their loss and also to everyone at Grace Pentecostal Church for their love and care also to Bro.
