Carmen Pedrosa indirectly advocates a coup to unseat Noynoy and the installation of a National Transformation Council to oversee day to day government operations and the amendment of the Constitution. Would this achieve its stated goals? Thailands constitutional monarchy enables the military to stage a coup without scaring off foreign investors and tourists. The King plays the stabilizing factor. In our case it would be difficult to pull off given our oligarchy driven democracy. Marcos was busy governing and fending off constant threats to his rule. Even the venerable benevolent dictator Lee Kuan Yew has observed that there is too much democracy in the Philippines. The military would be hard pressed staging a coup on its own in the absence of a charismatic and credible leader who would be able to take the reigns of government without any civilian political component. It is better to uphold the succession process outlined in the Constitution than go on an adventure which would diminish what little credibility our institutions have left.
