Carnivàle was one of the best written shows on cable (HBO). It was more than just a supernatural tale of good versus evil. It was written with the kind of attention to detail you would get in an epic novel. The main characters Ben Hawkins and Brother Justin are part of a lineage of avatars, each representing Light and Dark. Avatars work on a system of bloodlines. All Avatars are descendant from the original Avatar, a female simply known as the Alpha. To her, the original Creature of Light and Creature of Darkness were born, and so it continues into every generation thereafter. The Avatar bloodlines can be compared to the lines of a royal family. Avatars can only be male (with the exception of the original). Once an Avatar is born, all subsequent offspring in that generation from that mother are called Vectori, such as the sister to Brother Justin. Vectori have no powers except as influences, and can often become insane. Its really a shame that this show didnt extend past two seasons. Its been an inspiration to me as a writer, and Im considering working into my novel series a similar mythology at some point; most likely in the second book. If you havent seen the show, I highly recommend it. Learn more about the mythology here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mythology_of_Carniv%C3%A0le
