Carrick Council’s longest-serving member has announced he will step down from the local authority after 36 years. Alliance Party councillor Alderman Sean Neeson indicated his intention to withdraw from local politics this week, meaning he will not be seeking re-election to the new Mid and East Antrim authority in 2015. The former Assembly member for East Antrim was first elected to Carrick Council in 1977. Known as a keen historian and maritime enthusiast, he became heavily involved with several economic and business organisations in the town. The one-time leader of the Alliance Party also served as first citizen of the borough from 1993-1994. Speaking to the Times this week, Ald Neeson expressed his gratitude to the people of the borough for their ongoing support, particularly over the past twelve months.
