Cartoon Network feature first gay characters in new show, but they were banned from kissing on the mouth Cartoon Network introduces kids to gay characters, but heavily watered down what could have been a real moment in childrens television 28 OCTOBER 2014 | BY JOE MORGAN Clarence featured its first gay characters but the kiss was censored. Cartoon Network has aired a kids show featuring its first gay characters. But what could have been a real moment was watered down heavily by the network afraid that children would be confused by two men kissing. In a recent episode of Clarence, a new cartoon series focusing on a permanently optimistic boy, featured a small scene in a restaurant. It shows a woman waiting for a blind date when an attractive man shows up. The woman gets excited, waves hello, and then the man looks confused and it turns out that he is meeting his boyfriend. Woman gets upset. But while it might be an old joke, the kissing on the cheek was apparently the furthest Cartoon Network would allow the show to go. Spencer Rothbell, a voice actor and writer on the show, revealed on Twitter they had to fight to get the gay couple on screen. I just watched Neighborhood Grill tonight. I seriously want to know if you guys had to fight with CN to get a gay couple there, one Twitter user tweeted him. And he responded: Yeah, originally the guy had flowers and they kissed on the mouth. Rothbell added on his blog:It’s such a minor throwaway moment but I guess it’s better than nothing. Maybe one day the main character can be gay and it won’t be a big deal. - See more at: gaystarnews/article/cartoon-network-feature-first-gay-characters-new-show-they-were-banned-kissing-mouth281014#sthash.FWemHMzk.dpuf https://youtube/watch?v=M659_ak3K_8
