Cash Gate Scandal The past few days, I have spared some moments to take deep reflections of what is happening in Malawi. I have decided to “WATCH AND PRAY” God’s Commands and Social Responsibility The commands of God have a socio responsibility. They help communities to live together. In fact the eighth commandment is: you shall not steal. God makes it simple, doesn’t he? For society to function well, its people need to be honest and respect another’s property. Jesus said, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you for this sums up the law and the prophets.” Governing On Trust The People of Malawi give those in authority trust. This is done through the electro process. Thus those who govern becomes stewards. In a way the money in Malawi belong to Malawians. Thus Malawians have a right to know how much people in government earn, how their money is being used. They have the right to know the sources of finances of those who govern. They have the right to know how much the president receives, the minister, members of parliament and all public officers for that matter, as they are stewards of the resources God has vested in the nation of Malawi. Therefore, God gave the eighth commandment as a way to protect that which He has entrusted to our care. Stealing attempts to usurp God’s authority. Stealing is a denial of God’s authority over all things. It says that what God has given me is not enough. Alternatively, that I don’t respect God’s order of ownership and responsibility. And we have the laws of Malawi which was set primarily for those who govern other than the governed so that, that which is entrusted to their care is managed with due diligence. If an incident happens under a person’s watch, they can not deny responsibility, especially where they were given the stewardship role. It is disheartening to hear how people have disassociated themselves with the cash gate scandal at Capital Hill by simply saying, “I didn’t know this was happening.” We have such statements coming from controlling officers and heads of institutions. Honestly, if you didn’t know yet you were the responsible person, then it is a self performance appraisal of failure. If anything, it basically shows that you have no competency to care for the citizens property. The Cash Gate Scandal and Morality When you think about the Cash-Gate scandal, it is basically a moral issue. It is an indictment to the church. It tells of the failure of the church to bring transformative message to the nation of Malawi. It basically tells us that in truth Malawi is not a “God fearing nations” as the rhetoric has been in the years past. Malawi might have been “EVANGLISED” but not “DISCIPLED” It is a manifestation of our attitude. The attitude that made Malawians chose a leader in spite of their past history. We have to therefore repent as a people. A repentance that starts with the leaders of churches and then all as a nation. Stealing and Quantity One may ask, “how much do you have to steal to be a thief?” “How many lies do you have to tell to be a liar?” “How many people must you kill to be a murderer?” Stealing is stealing, Lying is lying and killing is killing. Corruption and Fraud. Corruption is the absence of something. You can’t fight corruption by focusing on corruption. It is like darkness, darkness is the absence of light. You can’t fight darkness on its own. You can’t fight darkness by complaining that it is dark, or by bringing awareness of its existence. You fight darkness by bringing light. So is corruption. You fight it by bringing integrity, honesty, accountability, transparency. Values which disperse of corruption and fraud. Corruption is destructive to society. Honesty is constructive to society. Now that Malawi is “fighting” theft, corruption, and fraud, one may want to ask a question, does Malawi have the capacity to do what it says it’s doing? If we can have an affirmative answer to this question, we can have hope. If not, the Jubilee that is coming, will leave us in the same state as we have been as a nation. Repentance and Restitution Leviticus 6:1-7 (ESV) The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “If anyone sins and commits a breach of faith against the Lord by deceiving his neighbor in a matter of deposit or security, or through robbery, or if he has oppressed his neighbor or has found something lost and lied about it, swearing falsely—in any of all the things that people do and sin thereby— if he has sinned and has realized his guilt and will restore what he took by robbery or what he got by oppression or the deposit that was committed to him or the lost thing that he found or anything about which he has sworn falsely, he shall restore it in full and shall add a fifth to it, and give it to him to whom it belongs on the day he realizes his guilt. There is hope for us as a people. We need to repent, and we need to move on the path restitution. Even if a church was found involved in the whole saga. The church will do well by being example in restitution. When we repent, God will forgive and heal us. There is a day of reckoning for the all unfaithful stewards. May that day come to all who have been irresponsible stewards of the riches of Malawi. LET US PRAY
