Cassie went to a group intro with several well balanced dogs at Sol Dog over a week ago(not her first but it had been a while since she had done this). Today i asked Rachel what her thoughts were about Cassie possibly living with other dogs. We know for sure no small dogs or cats as she has a prey drive, but the news was better then i thought . Happy New Years. She did great in the flooding. I think she could potentially live with the right other dog, in the right kind of home. I dont know how social shed be, but she could coexist with clear expectations. Then i asked her about how to start an intro: Id keep her on leash. Do some walks together. Separate a lot initially so they desensitize to each other. Correct bad behavior, reward good. Just the basics. Shes equally oblivious to male and female dogs here. Doesnt seem to have a preference. when she is in flooding is she on leash? special collar ? would it be a certain dog she might fit best with personality wise? We do it on a slip lead, and she comes off leash as soon as shes relaxed. But it works because there are too many dogs for her to single out one, and theyre balanced and will ignore her if she acts up. Its our job to give her guidance at the first possible sign she could have an issue. Shed do best with a balanced dog who will disengage if she becomes too pushy, and a proactive owner who will advocate for both dogs by giving them structure and guidance, as needed. So with that said I think if the home that had another dog wasnt to dominant or a total off the wall dog she might just might be able to coexist with another well balanced dog . She is extremely smart, non destructive, can entertain herself for hours with a bone. She is also very strong so a small person might not be a good fit as she bowls me over with her strength but i am not a weight lifter either :) She needs at least one good long walk a day and then she is able to relax ...tucsoncoldwetnoses to foster or adopt. Thank you.
