Catalonia and the Catalan Countries (Catalan-speaking countries) Name of Catalunya (“Catalonia”) derives from Latin Gathia launia - land of the Goths, or Goth-Alania - land of Goths and Alans, an Iranian tribe. County of Barcelona (801–1162), Principality of Catalonia (987–1716) Crown of Aragón (1162–1716), Kingdom of Aragón (1035–1706), the most important Catalan state in history. By the Decree of Nueva Planta (16 January 1716), Catalonia was integrated into Spain. Catalan (Català) is a Romance language (closely to Romanian), the national language of the Principality of Andorra and one of several co-official languages in Catalonia, Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands. Spain has the majority of active Catalan speakers. It is spoken or understood by approximately 11 million people (although approximately only half of them have it as a mother language) who live not only in Andorra and Spain but also in parts of southern France (most of Pyrénées Orientales) and in the city of Alghero in Sardinia, Italy.
